Different Twists, Common Thread

September 2 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

$3 – $12

Morris County Historical Society Curator of Collections Anne Motto will demonstrate the ins and outs of the 19th– and 20th– century sewing machines featured in our current exhibit, Cut from Different Cloth: The Art of Women’s Handwork, 1865-192, on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

During the presentation, which begins at 11 a.m., some of the machines used during that period will be displayed on the back porch while the remainder of the collection is on view in the exhibit.

While there were hundreds of sewing machine manufacturers in the latter half of the 1800s, the Singer Sewing Machine Co. dominated the market by the end of the century. Companies like Demorest, White, and Florence, known for their unique characteristics, faded into history while Willcox and Gibbs now manufacture machines for industrial use only.

MCHS is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Lafayette Ave., Morristown, and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibits and grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, and is free for children younger than 12 and MCHS members. For more information, call (973) 267-3465 or visit MorrisCountyHistory.org.
